UK Show Results for Cedar House bred Alpaca and their progeny |
|
This is our local show and it has been growing in Breed Entires each year so for the first time the entries were split with Huacayas on Saturday and Suris on Sunday. The weather was great and the alpacas were as usual very popular with the crowds. A popular new event on Saturday was a chance for the public to lead an alpaca during the lunch break and on Sunday this was moved to the Shearing Competition area for the whole day. Exhibitors were not only kept busy in the showring, back at the pens the public were enthusiastic and had lots of questions. Lots of farm visits were arranged for those wanting to know more. This year Kumeu was run as a colour show. We had the same show team as Morrinsville show and were very pleased with our results and the excellent comments our animals had from judge, Julie Mansell: 2nd - Thorburn West Wind - Senior Male - White/Light Fawn We were thrilled with Serkan's win and Stormy's 2nd in a big class of excellent mid/dark fawn Intermediate males.

A big thank you to the convenor, Julie Mansell, and her team for all their hard work. After such a great run of fine weather the show day was very wet and quite a lot colder but we alpaca breeders are a keen lot and most were able to come along. We were fortunate that the Highland Dancing Competition was moved indoors so we had their large marquees to cover the show ring and stewards table and there was even good seating for spectators. Some gazebos were erected and a few pens squeezed undercover but not enough room for all so most of us kept our alpacas in our floats or trailers. My alpacas were dry but keeping them in the van does not help the fleeces to look their best, so I was very happy with the results for my small team of 4 males: Simply Serkan - 1st Intermediate Male - MF/DF and Champion Intermediate Huacaya This was a thrilling big win for me with Serkan and we are very excited at the potential of both these young males for our herd breeding program. Thorburn West Wind - 2nd Senior Male - W/LF Cedar House Banjo - 1st Senior Male - Grey - an excellent result for this young male at his first show and with only a little over a months fleece growth. West Wind, aka Westie, belongs to Jenny Durno of Thorburn Alpacas in Ngatea. His sire is Cedar House Zephyr. He has had excellent placings in previous shows including Champion Junior Huacaya at Warkworth, 1st at Hawkes Bay and 2nd in a huge class of Intermediate Males at the 2010 National Show - the 1st place went on to be the National Supreme Champion. Today unfortunately his fleece had suffered the most in the humidity of the van and lost much of it's character but Judge, Diane Marks and apprentice judge, Sarah Busby, loved the "to die for" soft handle. He had also not been keen to jump into the van earlier in the day and may have been a bit sore from the scraping he got to his back legs but is okay now. These four will also be at Kumeu Show, Saturday 12 March so please come along to our pens and have a look at their fleeces. |

After the recent unsettled weather Kumeu Show Sunday was fine and not too hot. Most of our own "Simply Alpacas" are either too recently shorn or too pregnant to be shown but we did enter a wonderful selection of the Cedar House alpacas that are based with us here in Auckland. All 7 of the Cedar House entries won ribbons and the full results can be seen on our Show Results page. Those ribbons included: The highlight of the day was winning the Supreme Champion Suri with a 49 month old female, Cedar House Silk Pride. The line up of Suri Champions was impressive and several had already won Supremes at shows earlier in the year so our two entries, Nellie Melba and Silk Pride faced some tough competition. Silk Pride has been shorn 3 times and had 13 months fleece on her. She's had two cria, both females, with the latest just two months old. Her outstanding pedigree contains all USA bloodlines. Her sire is Cedar House Silk Prince, a Peruvian Senator son and her dam is Cedar House Showpiece sired by ILR Peruvian Amador out of a Peruvian Senator female. Silk Pride has only been shown twice. The first time was also in New Zealand at the 2007 National Expo where she was Reserve Champion Senior Female in a class described by USA judge Jude Anderson as the best Senior Female class she had seen anywhere in the world. The winner and Champion from that class, Surico Ballerina went on to be the Supreme Champion Suri later in the show.
